One of the major highlights of the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL was the ability to click portrait photos and that too without exotic hardware. Google achieved this by focusing more on the software side rather than including a secondary camera sensor. Google recently open sourced a code similar to the Pixel 2. Portrait Mode Code: What’s The Technology?
Last year Google amazed the entire smartphone industry, by introducing the world’s first smartphone having a DXO camera rating of 98. The Pixel 2 offers depth-of-field and portrait mode without relying on a secondary camera sensor.
It is an AI-based image segmentation technology that uses a neural network to identify, outline and differentiate between the image foreground and background. The camera then focuses on the foreground and ignores the background.

What’s The Advantage?
Google shared (open sourced) this technology so that other smartphone manufacturers can use this code to develop something more beneficial. It is worth noting that, Google shared a similar and not the exact same code used in the Pixel 2.
This code will be beneficial for improving other smartphone cameras. It can also be utilized in other academics and research fields to innovate and develop something more useful that was unnoticed by Google.
