ASUS TUF Gaming FX504 Vs MSI GF63 8RD: Design

The ASUS TUF Gaming FX504 doesn’t look that pretty but looks tough visibly. It has a black hunk of plastic with faux-aluminum blushing and red paint in an angular, lined pattern and has an ASUS logo on the lid, which glows.

With a smaller footprint than FX504, the MSI GF63 looks stealthy and minimal, thanks to the black brushed aluminum lid with the dragon emblem stamped near the top with no glow. But hey, unlike the FX504, the GF63 is made entirely of metal, however, the bottom is plastic.

PORTS

The FX504 comes with a Kensington lock slot on the right-hand side. Coming to the left, there are 2 x USB 3.1, 1 x USB 2.0, an HDMI, Ethernet, power, and a 3.5mm audio jack. Evidently, ASUS has skipped other I/O ports like USB-C, SD card, this is when the laptop has a lot of void space internally.

On the other side, the GF63 gets a pair of USB 3.1 (Gen 1) ports on the right with a USB Type-C 3.1 (Gen 1) port, Ethernet and a security lock slot with jacks for a microphone and a pair of headphones. On the left, there’s another USB 3.0 port and the power input. No, HDMI is not missing, it is at the rear end of the system.

ASUS TUF Gaming FX504 Vs MSI GF63 8RD: Display

ASUS FX504 comes with a 15.6-inch, 1080p display, but is dim, surrounded by a chunky bezel and thanks to TN panel, it has a poor off-angle viewing. The colors look slightly muted and the contrast isn’t particularly good either. There’s a slight flex in the display compared to the GF63.

ASUS TUF Gaming FX504 Vs MSI GF63 8RD

Well, the GF63 comes with 15.6-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) IPS display, produces great colors with good viewing angles and contrast that makes the visuals look great when compared with the FX504. And unlike the FX504, the GF63 has thinner bezels, which makes the gaming experience stellar.

Keyboard, TrackPad, Audio & Webcam

ASUS TUF Gaming FX504 Vs MSI GF63 8RD

The keyboard of FX504 is fairly huge and gives out a sweet typing experience, with a key travel of 1.4 millimeters. Well, the GF63 has a pretty good keyboard too but lacks Numpad and the key travel isn’t good either. Both the machine has a backlit keyboard but only RED color option.

Coming to the trackpad, both the machine has a well laid out trackpad with Microsoft’s Windows Precision Drivers. The accuracy and the gestures worked really well, however, FX504 gave a good experience overall.

ASUS TUF Gaming FX504 Review

The speakers on FX504 were loud and clear, while the speaker placement on GF63 wasn’t on point, which gave out muffled audio experience. The ASUS’ up hand speaker placement and the included DTS audio app gives out a pretty good experience overall, comparatively.

Well, the webcam on both laptops is almost the same, however, the GF63’s webcam seems real with colors, unlike the F504 with color inversion. Overall, both the webcam are decent, if not poor.

Apart from that, both the laptop sports Nvidia GeForce 1050Ti (4GB RAM) graphics. Coming to the storage side, both (again) packs a 128GB SSD, and coming to HDD, the FX504 packs a 1TB SSHD, while the GF63 packs a 1TB HDD.

ASUS TUF Gaming FX504 Vs MSI GF63 8RD

Unlike other MSI, ASUS has gone for a mid-range NVMe SSD and an SSHD giving a better experience, which is visible in normal (daily) usage. However, it is hard to distinguish the overall performance (also in terms of gaming) between two, as performs really well, which is also marked by its specs.

ASUS TUF Gaming FX504 Vs MSI GF63 8RD: Battery & Heat

The battery life isn’t always the best in gaming laptops. But the TUF Gaming FX504 packs in a huge 48Wh battery, which gives out a pretty good battery life and in our test, it has endured 4 hours and 15 minutes with normal usage.

On the flip side, the MSI GF63 houses a 3-cell Li-Polymer 51WHr battery and gives out around to 3 hours 50 minutes of usage backup on a single charge when used for non-gaming tasks. Overall, in the battery department, both perform well, but ASUS has a slight edge over the MSI GF63, thanks to software tweaks.

Speaking of performance, heat dissipation is the main concern, which the TUF gaming FX504 does it pretty elegantly thanks to void internal space, which MSI GF63 lacks, however, that doesn’t mean, the GF63 has the heating issue. Both the does pretty well in throwing heat out, but again, FX504 has front-foot when compared.

Verdict

The ASUS TUF Gaming FX504 with the NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti and the 120Hz panel is a great gaming laptop for the price you’re paying. On the other side, the MSI GF63 offers a compact design with almost the same specs (but lacks that 120Hz display) which is again not a bad choice. The ASUS TUF Gaming FX504 is priced at Rs. 74,990 (as of now), while the MSI GF63 8RD is priced at Rs 84,490 (as of now).
