WhatsApp Messages Encrypted? Nah!

Previously the WhatsApp backups stored on Drive used to count within 15GB free space that a Google account offered. In a blog post, WhatsApp also confirmed that the data stored on Google Drive is not encrypted. The company said- “Media and messages you back up aren’t protected by WhatsApp end-to-end encryption while in Google Drive”.

WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption has been always questioned by authorities, but the Facebook-owned company has always promised complete end-to-end encryption, which is true, as the messages are stored on the phones of the user (not on WhatsApp servers). However, the company can’t guarantee the same for Google Drive backups.

Do note, it’s just a feature, WhatsApp is not forcing you. So, if you trust Google, you can enable it. If you enable, keep in mind, if law enforcement agencies request Google for specific user data, they have to comply.
