Huawei Nova 3 Vs Huawei P20 Pro: Design and Build

Huawei has chosen a glass sandwiched metal design for both the P20 Pro as well as the Nova 3. Both handsets have similar dimensions barring the smaller display on P20 Pro, due to the front mounted fingerprint scanner, which of course contributes to a larger chin and reduced screen-to-body ratio.

Huawei Nova 3 Vs Huawei P20 ProBoth smartphones (especially the Nova 3) have a really shiny back panel, though the Nova 3 lacks any sort of waterproofing, unlike the IP67 certified P20 Pro. That said, the P20 Pro is slightly heavier at 180g compared to Nova 3’s 166g.

While Huawei chose a 6.1-inch 18.7:9 AMOLED panel for the P20 Pro, they went with a 6.3-inch 19.5:9 IPS LCD for the Nova 3. Of course, AMOLED display on the P20 Pro offers deeper blacks, punchy colors, and lower power consumption compared to its LCD counterpart. Both displays are of Full HD+ resolution and sport a notch, though the P20 Pro has a smaller one if that makes you happy by any means.

Huawei Nova 3 Vs Huawei P20 Pro: Camera

The most noticeable difference between the P20 Pro and the Nova 3 will be in terms of camera performance. Huawei has gone all out with a Leica branded triple camera setup in the P20 Pro, sporting a massive 40-megapixel f/1.8 primary sensor along with a 20-megapixel f/1.6 monochrome and an 8-megapixel f/2.4 telephoto sensor on the rear.

It comes with a slew of features under the hood including AI-based stabilization, 5X hybrid zoom, a fantastic night mode, 960fps super slo-mo and a lot more, which will definitely appeal serious smartphone photographers. Up front, there is a 24-megapixel sensor for selfies.

Huawei Nova 3 Vs Huawei P20 ProHuawei Nova 3 comes with a moderate  16-megapixel (f/1.8 regular) + 24-megapixel (f/1.8 monochrome) combo on the back with Huawei’s AI features. Nova 3 also has a dual 24-megapixel (f/1.8 regular) + 2-megapixel (depth-sensing) combo for selfies.

Without any doubt, P20 Pro will be the champion when it comes to rear camera performance, but Nova 3 might produce better selfie portraits due to the additional depth sensor. The wider notch on the Nova 3 houses an infrared sensor which illuminates the face even in dark situations for faster and safer face-unlock while the P20 Pro relies solely on front camera for face-unlock. Moreover, Nova 3 also brings Huawei’s Animoji rip-off – “Qmoji”, which from the looks of it seems meh.

Huawei Nova 3 Vs Huawei P20 Pro: Performance & UI

Huawei P20 Pro, as well as the Nova 3, packs in the flagship Kirin 970 chipset with a dedicated NPU and Mali G-72 MP12 GPU coupled with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. Storage expansion is available only on the Nova 3 through a hybrid slot.

Huawei Nova 3 Vs Huawei P20 Pro: Battery

The Huawei P20 Pro has a considerably larger 4000mAh battery while the Nova 3 isn’t that behind with a 3750mAh unit. Both have fast charging support but misses out on wireless charging, despite having a glass back.

Miscellaneous

Though the Huawei P20 Pro and Nova 3 comes with USB Type-C ports, the P20 Pro supports USB 3.1 speeds whereas the Nova 3 is limited to USB. 2.0. While the Nova 3 lacks NFC, FM radio, IR blaster and stereo speakers, the P20 Pro misses out on the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Huawei Nova 3 Vs Huawei P20 Pro: Pricing

As we mentioned earlier, Huawei P20 Pro comes at a flagship price of Rs. 64,999 while the Nova 3 is priced at Rs. 34,999.

Final Verdict

Now that we can get the performance of Kirin 970 chipset along with its NPU and AI capabilities at almost half the price of P20 Pro without compromising on modern aesthetics (I mean the notch), the choice can be pretty straightforward. Unless you want the absolute crazy flexibility with the cameras or the AMOLED screen and IP67 rating, there isn’t actually any point in spending that extra on the P20 Pro.

If you can’t stand the notch, but prefer Huawei/Honor smartphone, the Honor View 10 is still a viable choice. If you want a more compact yet stylish smartphone, you can consider the Honor 10 as well. Afterall, Huawei Nova 3 is nothing but a glorified Honor 10.
