The OnePlus 8 Pro comes with a 5MP Color Filter camera, which, as the name suggests, is useful for applying Instagram-like filters to your photos. On the internet, there are several images of OnePlus 8 Pro’s Color Filter camera being able to capture the internals of particular objects, which are completely opaque. How is it able to do it?

How Does the Color Filter Camera Work?

To understand the answer to this question, we first need to discuss how light works and how the human eye observes light. The Human eye can see the light from the visible spectrum, which ranges from 380nm to 720nm. Also, our ears can interpret sound, which runs from 20Hz to 20KHz. Anything that’s below or above this range cannot be heard unless you’re a superhuman.

Essentially, all the light that is emitted is in the form of electromagnetic radiation, and the visible light that we see is also electromagnetic radiation. The other bi-products of electromagnetic radiation like X-Rays, Radiowaves, Gamma Rays are not visible to our naked eye because they either lie beneath or ahead of the Visible light’s spectrum.

You can capture Radiowaves/X-Rays only if you have the equipment, just like how our baggage is checked at the airports using X-Rays.

If we were able to see the light in every spectrum, everything around us would look entirely different and weird. Enough talk about Physics, the OnePlus 8 Pro was able to see the opaque objects as transparent only because the surface of the item is opaque. Still, under the IR light that OnePlus 8 Pro’s Color Filter camera uses, no color information is being sent to the sensor.

This is what’s making the objects look transparent, and it’s similar to how X-Rays bounce off the internal parts of our body and form an image. If these kinds of sensors were made available in the upcoming smartphones, this could open new possibilities for different types of photography and videography.
