There’s no better feeling than getting a new laptop/desktop for yourself. The smile that the first boot puts on your face is priceless. However, newbies tend to make a lot of mistakes as soon as they start using the computer. To avoid these mistakes, we have compiled a list of things that you should do to set up your new computer.
Things To Do With A Brand New Laptop
1) Updating Your Operating System
It is unlikely that your brand new laptop will have the latest version of the OS installed out of the box. Hence, it is recommended that you update your OS first.
If you try installing applications while updating the OS, you’re going to have a bad experience as updates tend to consume a lot of CPU resources in the background. The updates are going to be pretty big. Hence we suggest you leave the computer for a fair amount of time.
2) Removing Unnecessary Applications
You will find a lot of useless apps preloaded in the first boot. These apps will slow down your computer significantly if you don’t get rid of them. Hence, we’d suggest you uninstall them first by going to Control Panel -> Uninstall a program -> Select the Application -> Uninstall, if you’re on Windows.
For Mac, navigate to the /Application folder, find the app that you want to uninstall, right-click, and select “move to trash.”
You should also delete any third-party antivirus software that comes preinstalled in almost every Windows 10 laptop. Windows 10 comes with Windows Defender, which will save you from nearly any type of attack or viruses.

3) Review Windows Defender’s Status
Click on the start icon and search for “Windows Security.” It is a place where you can find out how secure your PC is. If you find everything marked in ‘Green,’ your PC is probably doing fine. If it’s ‘Red,’ you should consider looking into the issues and fix them as soon as possible.
4) Install Your Favourite Applications
After everything’s done, go ahead and install the apps you need. Try finding the apps in Windows Store first as its more secure than installing it from the web. If you don’t see it there, search on the internet. We suggest you download apps from the developer’s website only as downloading it from untrusted sites will infect your computer with viruses.Installing every app by going through the installation process could be a pain. Hence, we suggest you try out Ninite. The app allows you to check all the apps you want to install without clicking through dialog boxes or worrying about bundled junk getting installed.

5) Personalize The Computer And Make It Truly Yours
Who doesn’t like personalizing their computer? Windows and Mac allow you to choose between visually striking themes. I’m a fan of ‘Automatically pick an accent color from my background’ feature. Additionally, you can also download themes from the Microsoft Store.
6) Install An SSD
Solid State Drives (SSD) are the future of storage technology. Some laptops come with preinstalled SSDs but, if yours doesn’t have one adding an SSD will make your it a lot faster. If you’ve purchased a computer recently, the chances of it having the M.2 slot are higher (M.2 is a form factor of SSDs which are faster than SATA, which is an older form factor).

7) Install Driver Updates And Register For Warranty
If you’re facing issues on the laptop, it is not the manufacturer who should be blamed. Try updating the drivers instead by going to the manufacturer’s website and selecting your model. Drivers play a crucial role and help your PC function smoothly.
You should also go ahead and register for the warranty so that if you run into issues like manufacturing defects, it can be solved quickly without you spend extra bucks (which is totally unnecessary).
So, these were seven things you must do when you get a brand new laptop home. If you have any queries, let us know in the comments below.
