Samsung has launched its latest mid-range smartphone – Samsung Galaxy A9 with quad rear cameras. The vertically aligned quad cameras are its main highlight. It includes the main 24-megapixel sensor with f/1.7 aperture, 10-megapixel Telephoto lens with a f/2.4 aperture for 2x optical zoom, 8-megapixel 120° Ultra Wide Lens for wide-angle photos and lastly, the fourth 5-megapixel camera to capture depth information for portrait shots.

Does The Quad Cameras Make Sense?
We are living in the age where Google Pixel 3/3 XL promises to handle every camera huddles with a single lens, and on the other side, we have major OEMs using dual, triple and now quad cameras to give out almost the same functionalities (of course few added features included with this).
Do triple cameras justify? forget it. We now have quad rear cameras to debate on. We have earlier seen Huawei P20 Pro sporting triple lens, which apparently proves that more lenses are better, but to be real it only better for ranking high (P20 Pro ranks the highest in DxOMark, this might change soon). No secret, we know rankings are based on many different factors.

What’s the point of having quad lenses? do we take such complex pictures to justify having more rear lens? not really. Let me put it this way, OEMs are adding cameras (lens) to showcase the ability of their cameras and now they have (sort of) reached the peak (at least with the quad cameras, I suppose) and has almost saturated.
Huawei P20 Pro
So, the camera gig will get excited, when Google adds a secondary lens to their Pixel line of devices (which is already a camera smartphone), what companies like Samsung, Huawei, LG are going to do? Octa cameras? well, I have no answer to this, but one thing is for sure, the cameras are being targeted as USP of any smartphone, and in 2018, it is taking a weird turn.
It would a prejudiced judgement we don’t wait for the full camera review of the Galaxy A9, before we put out our statement on it. But as of now, I don’t think we really need the (ugly) quad cameras to take our desired pictures. What do you guys think? Do share your thoughts in the comments below.
