Twitter has finally expanded its character limit to 280. Earlier the long count was in beta testing and was initially available to a select group of users as a trail, but starting today, it is rolling out publicly to all users.

Twitter: From 140 To 280! Why?
This initiated because those who tweeted in languages like Japanese, Korean and Chinese were able to express around double the amount of information in a single character compared to the users who spoke English, Spanish, Portuguese or French.

The downside though, many users argued that 280 characters would make Twitter less readable and the company could lose its identity and in addition to that, this will increase critical problems like abuse, harassment, and bullying.

The New 280
In today’s blog post, Twitter’s 280 character count is going public. The concern of Twitter less readability is real but the micro-blogging company said that, during the trial period, people continued to tweet below 140 characters (most of the time).
In addition to that, the company found that only 5 percent of tweets were sent out with more than 140 characters and of those, only 2 percent were over 190 characters and only 1 percent of tweets hit the character limit after the expansion to 280, compared with 9 percent of tweets.
