Google To Launch A UPI Based Mobile Payment App ‘Tez’ In India; Report

Google has been increasing its focus on India with its Apps and plans. Well, according to a report from The Ken, Google is planning to introduce a mobile payment app called Tez (meaning fast in Hindi) in India.

India has the fastest growing internet user base with strong consumer presence. Well, the report claimed that the app will offer a comprehensive set of payment options, which will be beyond existing Google products like Google Wallet or Android Pay.

This app will include support for Unified Payments Interface (UPI) – a payment system backed by the government of India. It will be a dedicated app and will apparently take on Paytm, MobikWik, Flipkart’s PhonePe and other UPI based payment apps.

In extension to this report, The Ken has also dug up government filings to show Google is indeed planning to release a product named Tez in India and surprisingly there could be an international expansion too since Google has registered trademarks for Tez in Indonesia and the Philippines. Well, tez.google.com is waiting to go live.
