Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers (KPCB), who is known to deliver rapid-fire internet trend reports every year which is very much awaited by the tech world. Well, India’s report will make you go wow this time around.

Internet Trends: India Internet Users
- The report shows the growing dominance of mobile, as the number of internet users in India has grown rapidly with over 355 MM Internet Users in June 2016 and 277 million broadband users in March 2017 and interestingly, 72% of Internet users in India are less than 35 years of age. Although, China is leading with around 700 million Internet users.
- The volume of wireless broadband data consumed by Indians has risen sharply, which from less than 200 million GB a month in June 2016 to somewhere around 1.3 billion GB a month in March 2017.
Internet Trends: India Smartphones & Data Costs
- India has the highest usage of Android phone and has the most number of downloads from the Google Play Store around the globe. 80% of all web traffic in India (45% is on entertainment, 34% on search, social media and messaging, and 4% on shopping) arise from the mobile, which second highest in the world, after Nigeria. Indians spend 28 hours a week on the mobile, as compared to 4 hours on TV.
- Thanks to Reliance Jio’s disruptive pricing, the Indian internet, and telecom market has shown an amazing growth. According to the report, the data prices per GB have fallen from around $3.5 to $1.8 in the same period (Reliance Jio itself charges around $0.17).

- The report highlights the big challenges to the mobile ecosystem in India. While the prices of smartphones are down, a typical one still costs around 13% of per capita GDP. India fares better on the data front, with annualized cost of 1GB of data a month working out with less than 2% of per capita GDP.
