Twitter last year announced that it’s going to drop its long-standing 140-character limit. Well, the company has ended up keeping the limit but with some added bonus functionality.

This bonus features started implementing eventually after the announcement. One such example is, Twitter a while back decreed photos and videos no longer count against the 140-character limit and now, the company is doing the same with usernames.

Twitter No Longer Count Usernames

This is a pretty big deal when someone replies to your tweet, then an another person jumps in with a reply and again another. Though there is no fault of your own, as you have to reply to three usernames, but if you continue the conversation, that could easily take up half of the 140-character limit. See, it does matter.

Twitter has simplified conversations in a few ways:

  • Who you are replying to will appear above the Tweet text rather than within the Tweet text itself, so you have more characters to have conversations.
  • You can tap on “Replying to…” to easily see and control who’s part of your conversation.
  • When reading a conversation, you’ll actually see what people are saying, rather than seeing lots of @usernames at the start of a Tweet.

From now on, Twitter will only count the text you add to the tweet in the 140-character limit, not the username or the photo. The app will list the @names above the tweet for the clarity. This feature is rolling out right now to the web and officially app and will be added to the third-party apps soon.
