Karnataka Government Orders To Halt Uber Pool And Ola Share: Here Is Why?

Apparently, Uber Pool and Ola Share services are illegal according to Karnataka’s State Transport Department. So, cab aggregators Uber and Ola is halting their respective ride-sharing services by Thursday i.e February 2nd.


Well, Karnataka government has got a point and it pretty amazing to see how they took down the situation with mutual understanding. All the ride providing services have a contract carriage permits that allows only point-to-point rides but not multiple pick up and drops in a single trip.

After two hours of long meeting with the Transport Commissioner M.K. Aiyappa on Monday, both the companies has agreed to halt ride-sharing services.

M.K. Aiyappa told LiveMint,

We have explained to them (Ola and Uber) and they have also agreed that what they are doing now is illegal. They will make changes. The companies have asked for three days to modify their software. If they do not comply, we will have to take action against them.

He also added that Uber and Ola will have to submit a petition to his Transport Department elaborating on why they believe ride-sharing should be allowed, which will be forwarded to the government for consideration.

Uber spokesperson spoke about Uber Pool service in an email to Livemint said;

We would like to reiterate that UberPOOL is clearly within the law. We will continue to engage with the transport department and Karnataka government as ride-sharing products like uberPOOL are the future of urban mobility, helping decongest cities by getting more people into fewer cars and letting riders move around their city more affordably.
